Description
This is a 14K yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubbleback, 3131. It has a leather strap with a yellow gold tang buckle, and an acrylic crystal. The 32mm diameter curved bezel, circular dial, tonneau-shaped Oyster case, and downturned lugs are polished, as is the coin-edged half-dome-shaped "bubble" screwed down case back and crown. The dial is white with yellow gold applied Arabic numeral and dart hour index markers, and an outer minute/seconds track. It has luminous gold alpha hands and a arched blued sweep seconds hand with an arrow tip. The movement is signed "Rolex Perpetual Chronometer," and the 13mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. It was produced circa 1946.
The automatic self-winding Rolex movement is rhodium-plated. It's constructed with 18 jewels, a shock absorber mechanism, a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance, and a self-compensating flat balance spring.
Rolex debuted the first bubbleback in 1933, which featured the first auto-rotor. Rather than making the watch larger, Rolex invented the half-domed case back to accommodate the thicker rotor mechanism. In English it was designated Bubbleback, and the Italians named it the "ovettone" or Little Egg. The first two-piece case debuted with model 3131 in 1936. Rolex produced the auto-rotor mechanism based on the Aegler movement in hunter watches featuring a perpetual motion winding mass. They patented their first perpetually self-winding wristwatch in 1932, introducing the Bubbleback a year later.
